The Application
Milk from large dairy farms is processed and converted into powdered milk for ease of shipment. The powdered milk is stored in large silos, typically 35 ft. to 60 ft. high. The measurement is important for inventory control and indication of when the silos should be emptied.
The Problem
Traditional “Ultrasonic” measurements only gave level indication in the smallest silos and did not provide reliability in the dusty atmosphere during filling and emptying. In many cases, the silos needed to be manually sounded with rope and weight. This proved to be a problem as the FDA inspectors, who visit frequently, are very critical of any contact form of level measurement. Compliance with the FDA motivated the end user to eliminate any device that may be considered nonsanitary by the FDA inspectors.
The Solution
Drexelbrook installed a
DR7000 continuous level transmitter with a DN80 Horn with extension on a Sanitary Triclover fitting. The
DR7000 level transmitter uses 24-26 GHz FMCW Radar technology to make a continuous level measurement regardless of dust, vapors, moisture content or moisture variations of the low dielectric powdered product. The
DR7000 level transmitter is now providing reliable non-contact, sanitary continuous measurement of the powdered milk level in the tallest silos.
